چکیده
Considerable interest has of late been taken by the Indian public and by its professional members-regarding the use of indigenous drugs in the treatment of disease. Indeed it has been argued that apart from economic considerations, these drugs are more suited to the habits of the people and the climatic conditions that prevail in this country. The question of the restoration and development of the indigenous systems of medicine has therefore been discussed in the Indian Legislative Assembly and the different Provincial Councils. While we are not concerned here with the merits of such revival, we have no doubt that out of the large number of drugs used by Kavirajs and Hakims for centuries past and still in use, there are some at least that deserve the reputation they have earned as cures. On the other hand there are others of little therapeutic value that are given only because they are mentioned in some old manuscripts, and no one has taken the trouble to confirm the truth of these statements. Medicine is a progressive science; in every department an attempt is being made to. replace empiricism by rationalism, and nowhere is this more evident than in the science of pharmacology and therapeutics. Thus when it is said that ashoka (Saracct indica) is useful in menorrhagia, punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) in dropsy, and abrak bhas-

The extreme rarity of these two fevers in India, and specially in Bengal, might be expected to greatly modify the relative incidence of the various cardiac diseases in tropical as compared with those of temperate climate. An extensive experience of post-mortems at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital fully confirms this surmise, while an analysis of the records from 1873 to t...

I feel, therefore, that my views on the above subject may be of interest to the medical profession in India. The announcement of the discovery of radium was made at the Academie de Sciences in Paris on the 26th December, 1898?about 28 years ago?in a joint paper by M. and Mme. Curie. The first to discove...

sues to drug solutions is seen to be dependent upon many biological factors : upon electric potential, conditions of solubility and ionisation and the like. In brief, modern pharmacology of to-day has become an exact and exacting science, calling alike upon the biologist, the expert chemist, the physiologist, and the pharmacist to assist in building up a new science of therapy, dependent upon a...

A striking feature of the Calcutta postmortem series is tlie comparatively early period of life at which the great majority of the deaths took place, in spite of the fact that very few children are contained in the series. Thus, although but 2'7 per cent, were under 11 years of age, yet 80 per cent, of the Hindus and 62 per cent, of the Mahomedans were not above 40 years of age, while 52 per ce...
